Follow the leader

Second album by US hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, released in 1988 by Uni Records.

Follow the leader is a concentration of jamming and poetic techniques:

Follow me into a solo get in the flow

And you can picture like a photo.

1.The words fol-low and so-lo rhyme with flow: internal rhyme

2.When we have the same consonants but no vowels, or vice versa, we talk about assonance: e.g. solo/photo, flow/photo..

The combination of rhyme and rhythm (flow) helps us predict how the bar will be closed, but a good mc can also construct an obvious rhyme to throw us off or surprise us.

Music mixed mellow maintains to make
melodies for MC's motivate the break
I'm everlasting, I can go on for days and days
With rhyme displays that engrave deep as X-rays

This repetition of sounds, consonants or vowels, at the beginning and within words is alliteration. The transition from “m” to “a” (which is not phonetically corresponding to the /a/ in Italian), is aided by the word “motivate” which contains both sounds.

In this piece, Rakim forces some words to rhyme based purely on his ability to force their pronunciation.

- Nam, bomb, alarm, calm

Adam Bradley defined this ability as “transformative rhyme,” words that do not rhyme for anything, but can in the way we choose to pronounce them.

[ «The poetics of hip hop», New York: Basic Civitas Books, 2009, p.66]

Rakim shows how rhymes can also be constructed through multiple syllables:

You're just a rent-a-rapper, your rhymes are Minute-Maid
I'll be here when it fade, I'll watch you flip like a renegade
I'm Rakim, the fiend of a microphone
I'm not him, so leave my mike alone

Discover, learn about and narrate the city's museums and libraries and the heritage they hold through different looks, words and stories to foster dialogue between cultures, decolonizing knowledge, memories, imaginaries. Starting from the works present in the different city museums, emblematic peaks of the artistic and cultural history of the West, and from the vast documentary heritage of the city libraries, the intention is to deconstruct, decolonize, integrate, foster and weave exchanges and reflections between the history of these works/manufacts/documentary heritage and ‘other histories,’ those that have involved other countries and other cultures.

The narrative of the African continent in Italy continues to be stereotyped, unambiguous and distorted. The Western narrative tradition portrays it as a single country without voice and history, poor, hungry, prey to wars, famines and full of negativity. It robs people from the continent of their dignity and prevents them from thinking that they can produce culture, work, art, knowledge, knowledge, etc. It becomes impossible to see ә suә inhabitants as anything other than poorә. Their poverty is our only story about them, and in this single story there is no possibility for feelings more complex than pity or annoyance, no possibility of an equal relationship between human beings. There is a need for different stories because, as C. N. Adichie says:

stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.

A quiz on Africa then! To realize how much we know, how much we think we know, how much we can discover if we have access to the correct information. The objective is to contribute to the knowledge and construction of a new narrative on the African continent to combat racist stereotypes and racializing language used daily against people of African origin in Italy.
